Chronic pain was originally defined as pain that has lasted 6 months or longer. More recently it has been defined as pain that persists longer than the temporal course of natural healing that is associated with a particular type of injury or disease process. Chronic pain may generate other adversities including affective symptoms of depression and anxiety. It may also contribute to decreased physical activity given the apprehension of exacerbating pain.According to the National Institutes of Health (Harris et al. 1999), lower back pain is one of the most significant health problems in the United States, with back pain being the most frequent cause of activity limitation in people younger than 45 years of age: 65-80% of all people have back pain at some time in their life.
Here are the Causes of Back Pain in Chinese Medicine:Excessive physical work, in particular regularly lifting objects, strains the muscles of the lower back and the Kidneys.Excessive sexual activity weakens the back in an energetic sense as it depletes Kidney-energy(Qi) and a deficient Kidney-energy(Qi) fails to nourish and strengthen the back muscles. This causes only chronic, not acute, backache.Pregnancy and childbirth also weaken the back in two ways: in a purely physical way, they put a strain on the back muscles, and in an energetic sense, they weaken Kidney-energy(Qi) which consequently fails to strengthen the back muscles.Invasion of external Cold and Dampness is an extremely common cause of backache.Overwork in the sense of working long hours without adequate rest over many years depletes Kidney-Yin. This fails to nourish the back and leads to chronic backache.L apart from the above specific causes of backache it is many experts' opinion that the tremendous increase in back problems in Western industrialized societies is due to a lack of physical exercise especially for the vast numbers of people engaged in sedentary work.To know more about Chinese Medicine, Please call (407) 232 - 1757 to schedule an appointment. |
